Hydrabad: Indian Railways with a view to promote domestic container traffic has introduced the concept of an Exclusive Container Rail Terminal (ECRT). In this direction, South Central Railway is also promoting various customer centric initiatives by developing the infrastructure facilities to enhance the freight loading basket of the Zone.
In line with the Indian Railways initiative, South Central Railway has notified the Veldurthi Goods Shed of Hyderabad division as an Exclusive Container Rail Terminal (ECRT) on 10.6.2026 in order to create efficient logistics solutions closer to industrial clusters and production centers. The initiative is aimed at attracting new streams of container traffic and providing customers with cost-effective and sustainable freight solutions. It is the first goods shed in Hyderabad Division to be notified as an Exclusive Container Rail Terminal, marking a major step towards expanding multimodal logistics contributing towards economic growth and regional development.

Veldurthi Goods Shed of South Central Railway achieved a significant milestone by successfully loading its first container rake on 25th June 2026. The rake was dispatched to the Inland Container Depot, Phillaur in Punjab under Firozpur division of Northern Railway demonstrating the growing integration of India’s logistics network and the ability of Railways to connect industries across regions seamlessly.

The inaugural rake carried 2,760 tonnes of Pig Iron, introducing a new commodity to the freight basket of Veldurthi Goods Shed. Significantly, Veldurthi has become the first and only goods shed in the reorganized South Central Railway Zone to load Pig Iron in containers, opening new opportunities for the steel sector and showcasing the flexibility of containerized rail transportation.

The movement generated estimated freight revenue of Rs. 59 lakh, reflecting the growing potential of the new ECRT established at Veldurthi railway station and its capability in attracting high-value freight traffic. To continue this momentum, CONCOR has committed to load three container rakes every month from the terminal, paving the way for sustained freight growth and increased economic activity in the region.

On this occasion, Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager, SCR appreciated the efforts of the Hyderabad Division in capturing a new traffic on South Central Railway’s loading basket and advised all the officers and staff to continue the same momentum in future to make the South Central Railway’s flag high.
