PLASTIC-FREE LIFESTYLE IS THE BEST WAY TO CONTROL ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION

Hyderabad : Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University organized a lecture on “Nexus between waste management, climate change and energy security for sustainable development” on Thursday on the occasion of World Environment Day. Prof. E. Sudha Rani, Director Academic In-charge attended as the chief guest for the program.

Prof. Sudha Said for sustainable development that is beneficial to the environment, economic survival and accessible to the society. She stated that the misuse of plastic is causing serious damage to the environment. The University already prohibited usage of plastic, everyone to choose plastic reusable alternatives, avoid single-use plastics, and take sustainable solutions like recycling as personal responsibility. The governments and businesses should promote alternatives that reduce plastic waste management and production. The environmental pollution can be prevented only through greenery.

The Distinguished Guest Dr. A.Gangagni Rao, Director IICT and Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad explain about Environmental Issues, Challenges and Sustainable Development, Waste Management and Economy Models, the Global Challenges on Climate change. The Organic waste including Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) when diverted to landfill results in the emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. The bio-degradable waste should be processed treated and disposed of through composting or bio-methanation within the premises as far as possible. All hotels and restaurants should segregate biodegradable waste and such food waste should be utilized for composting / bio-methanation.

The Anaerobic Digestion Process mechanism and class of digesters is the final product of Anaerobic Digestion process which can be utilized as an organic fertilizer avoids the usage of synthetic fertiliser, reducing costs and associated emissions. He suggested that Creating Wealth Out of Organic Wastes Through Anaerobic Gas lift Reactor (AGR) for Energy Security and Sustainable Farming. Spreading it onto land can improve soil quality and reduce pesticide use and water demand, supporting farmers. The Plastic free lifestyle is the best way to control Environment pollution.

Prof. K. Prameela, Dean, Faculty of Sciences presided over the program and said the University already transformed into a plastic-free and eco-friendly university campus. Prof. S. V. Rajasekhar Reddy former professor of Geology, BRAOU; Directors, Deans, Heads of departments, teaching and non-teaching staff, Research Scholar and Students participated in the program.
