Hyderabad: Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, organised a full-day Hindi Workshop for its officers and employees under the aegis of the Official Language Implementation Committee. The workshop was conducted with the objective of strengthening the implementation of the Official Language Policy and promoting the effective use of Hindi in day-to-day official work.

The workshop focused on enhancing participants’ knowledge of official terminology, drafting of short office notes, Hindi typing tools, and various digital language resources such as BHASHINI and BHARATI, the AI-based translation tool developed by the Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, in collaboration with C-DAC. The participants were also familiarised with the constitutional provisions relating to the Official Language, the Official Languages Act, 1963, and the Official Languages Rules, 1976.

At the inaugural session, Dr. B. Balaji, Manager (Hindi Section & Corporate Communications), MIDHANI, welcomed the participants and explained the objectives of the workshop. He also highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by MIDHANI to promote the progressive use of Hindi in official work.

The first technical session was conducted by Santosh Kumar, Assistant Director (Typing & Stenography), Central Hindi Training Institute, Department of Official Language, who provided practical training on Hindi typing using InScript Keyboard, Indic Input Tool (Phonetic) and Google Voice Typing. He addressed the common misconception that Hindi
typing is difficult and encouraged participants to use these tools for efficient official communication.
The second session was delivered by Dr. B. Balaji, who explained the constitutional and statutory provisions relating to the Official Language Policy and discussed the annual targets prescribed under the Official Language Implementation Programme. He also introduced the participants to the SHABD multilingual terminology portal and the official website of the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) under the Ministry of Education, which provide standard technical and administrative terminology in all 22 scheduled Indian languages. He encouraged employees to make extensive use of these resources while preparing technical documents in Hindi.

The third session was conducted by Kamaluddin, Retired Assistant Director, Hindi Teaching Scheme, Department of Official Language, Ministry of Home Affairs, who delivered an informative lecture on drafting concise official notes. He emphasised that brief and precise noting facilitates quicker disposal of files and enables employees with limited proficiency in Hindi to work more effectively. He also explained the official correspondence policy and the targets prescribed for Regions A B and Cunder the Official Language Rules.
At the conclusion of the workshop, all participants took a pledge to promote the use of Hindi in official work and shared their feedback and suggestions for making future workshops more effective. Dr. Vikas Kumar Azad, Hindi Translator, and Shri Jaipal and Shri Prem from the Dispatch Section played an active role in the successful organisation of the workshop.
