Hyderabad : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the initiatives taken by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University towards a digital education system. Prof. G. Pushpa Chakrapani, Director, Centre for Online Education and Learning, announced that the UGC has permitted the university —the country’s first open university—to offer four courses through the online mode for the academic year 2026–27.
Prof. Pushpa Chakrapani described the UGC’s approval as a significant step forward in the digital era for the university in its mission to provide quality higher education through technology. She noted that while applications were submitted for a total of eight courses this academic year, the UGC approved four: M.A. (Telugu), M.Com, B.Com (English Medium) and B.Com (Telugu Medium). She expressed optimism that the remaining four programs would also receive approval once the suggestions and recommendations made by the UGC regarding them are addressed.

Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani, Vice-Chancellor, congratulated the University staff after receiving the official confirmation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) approval for the online programmes. Speaking to University officials during his official visit to Canada, Prof. Chakrapani said that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University, which was established as the country’s first Open and Distance Learning (ODL) university, is steadily transforming into a Digital University. He expressed confidence that, in the near future, the University would evolve into a fully digital institution by harnessing advanced technologies to deliver all its academic programmes online. He further stated that several innovative initiatives are being conceptualized and implemented with the support of the Government of Telangana and the encouragement of the members of the University Governing Council to strengthen the University’s digital transformation and expand access to quality higher education.
