Hyderabad : BJP State President N Ramchander Rao today said there was a need to taught the people specially younger generation about the atrocities of emergency imposed by former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi in the country. He was speaking at a function as a chief guest at Nalgonda who unveiled a book “Nalgonda Zilla Emergency Vyatireka Porata Yodhulu” (Fighters Against Emergency in Nalgonda District). Organized to commemorate the services of the heroes who fought to protect democracy during the Emergency.
The book was authored by Chinta Mutyala Rao. As we marked the 50 years since the imposition of emergency, it is our responsibility to ensure that the truth of the dark chapter in India’s history reaches every citizen especially the younger generation, Rao said adding that “the Emergency is the darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy”.

Future generations must know how Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency in those days to suppress political opponents, democratic forces, and dissenting opinions, he said and accused Indira Gandhi of imposing emergency to protect her PM post after Allahabad High court verdict which declared her election invalid. The atrocities committed during the 19-month period of the Emergency must be known to the people, future generations, and especially the youth. That is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made efforts to include these topics in the educational curriculum, because this is a crucial chapter in Indian history. The efforts are being made to present the true history of our nation, he said.

Rao alleged that it was Congress party which murdered the spirit of constitution and is now leveling baseless allegations against BJP which always consistently stood as the protector of the constitution and democratic values. Stating that people must know how Indira Gandhi violated the Constitution and how she tried to restrict power to her family. The Congress mindset of crushing democratic institutions and silencing dissent was also reflected in its attempts to curb press freedom and suppress every independent voice. Countless of RSS and Bharatiya Jana Sangh workers were jailed. Students were arrested. Lawyers were arrested. Pressure was exerted on judges. Attempts were made to suppress everyone with independent thoughts, he said.

Karimnagar S.R.R. College Principal Narasimha Rao was suspended. In Punjab, harassment took place simply because a judge’s relative had links with the RSS, Rao stated. He said the sacrifices made in those days by Sambamurthy, Chandramohan, Malesham, Murali, Suresh Reddy, Katta Ramchander, in Nalgonda districts and many others are extraordinary. The emergency witnessed widespread atrocities. Forced sterilization campaigns, large-scale demolitions, censorship on the media and imprisonment of thousands of political workers.
Even after 50years, the Congress party has not apologized for the emergency, he alleged that demanded Congress party to apologise to the nation for undermining the spirit of constitution and crushing democracy, to the families of those who were jailed, to the karyakarthas who were tortured and every citizen whose constitutional rights were crushed.
