Hyderabad: South Central Railway observed World Environment Day today at Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad. Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager, SCR was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Principal Heads of the Departments, SCR; Divisional Railway Managers, senior officials and staff also participated in the program.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager, SCR stated that South Central Railway has actively participated in the World Environment Day campaign launched by Ministry of Railway from 15th May to 05th June, 2026 with focus on the theme “Climate change, focusing on the challenges posed by Mother Earth”. The General Manager complimented the efforts of Environment and Housekeeping Management department for successfully coordinating the environment day activities conducted across the zone.
He stated that the drawing and essay writing competitions held for the children serve as a good reminder to protect our planet and environment. The General Manager stated that Railways is one of the greenest modes of transportation and highlighted that South Central Railway has shown its commitment towards the cause through various efforts such as electrification of tracks, renewable energy, water conservation, tree plantation and sustainable use of resources etc. He stated that the focus has shifted from celebration to action stage and urged team SCR to continue the same momentum for a greener future.

Satya Prakash, Additional General Manager, SCR appreciated the good work done by team SCR as part of World Environment Day campaign. He stated all the divisions and departments participated enthusiastically in the activities and noted that good progress has been achieved particularly in energy conservation and tree plantation drives. He emphasized that the earth and our environment has to be protected and sustained for the next generation. He noted that the rising temperatures as we see today can be managed through wise use of energy and making the environment green and beautiful again.
Earlier, officials from Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Nanded divisions and along with representatives from Engineering, Electrical and Medical Departments of SCR presented detailed reports on various initiatives undertaken by them during the World Environment Day campaign. The activities included Cleanliness and Waste Management drives, Plastic reduction and sustainable practices, ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” plantation drive, Green and Sustainable Railway Operations, Water and Energy Conservation drives etc. During the event, Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager, SCR presented mementos to winners of drawing and essay writing competitions held for the children of Railway employees on the theme “Climate change, focusing on the challenges posed by Mother Earth”.
Later, the General Manager, SCR, along with other senior officials, participated in a virtual meeting organized at the Railway Board level to mark World Environment Day celebrations. During the meeting, Satish Kumar, Chairman and CEO, Railway Board, emphasized the importance of cleanliness and effective waste management across the Indian Railways network. He stated that cleanliness should be imbibed into the daily working system and should not be treated as a separate activity. He stated that environmental sustainability is not a just one-day activity but a responsibility that must be practiced every day.
