South Africa opener Matthew Breetzke

Hyderabad: South Africa opener Matthew Breetzke shattered a 47-year-old record by scoring the highest total on a one-day international debut, hitting 150 against New Zealand in a Tri-Nations match at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Monday. The 26-year-old right-hander struck 11 fours and five sixes in his 148-ball knock, helping South Africa post a formidable 304 for six in their allotted 50 overs. His innings surpassed the previous record of 148 set by West Indies’ Desmond Haynes on his debut against Australia in Antigua in 1978. The previous South African best was Colin Ingram’s 124 against Zimbabwe in 2010.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet, and I’m a bit tired,” Breetzke admitted. “The pitch was tacky, and (New Zealand seamer Will) O’Rourke was really tough to face. My mindset was to bat as long as possible and give myself a chance at the end.” Not part of South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad, Breetzke batted until the 46th over in a second-string team missing several key batters unavailable for the series. He has previously represented South Africa in 10 T20 internationals and a single Test match.

Walking out to bat for the first time in international cricket is a dream come true. But imagine scoring a big hundred on debut is next-level stuff. It’s not just about making a statement; it’s about announcing your arrival. A few lucky batters have lived that dream and smashed the ball all over the park from the word go. Colin Ingram made a dream start to his ODI career with a spectacular 124 off 126 balls against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein. With Hashim Amla piling on the runs at the other end, Ingram capitalized on the strong foundation and went on the attack. The stylish left-hander struck 8 fours and 2 sixes, thrilling the crowd with his fluent stroke play. His knock propelled South Africa to a massive 351/6. Zimbabwe fought hard but fell well short, losing by 64 runs. Mark Chapman announced himself on the international stage in grand style, remaining unbeaten on 124 off 116 balls against the UAE in Dubai. His well-paced innings, laced with 11 fours and 2 sixes, powered Hong Kong to an imposing 298/4.

Chapman’s elegant stroke-making made life miserable for the bowlers, and his effort proved too much for the UAE, who were bowled out for just 209. Now representing New Zealand, Chapman’s debut remains one of the finest in ODI history. Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s fearless batting was on full display during his debut against Ireland in Abu Dhabi. Right from the start, he took on the Irish bowlers, smashing his way to 127 off 127 balls. His innings featured 9 massive sixes and 8 fours, helping Afghanistan post a competitive 287/9. Ireland put up a fight, but Gurbaz’s brilliance proved decisive as Afghanistan secured victory by 16 runs. Facing an Australian bowling attack led by the fearsome Jeff Thomson, Desmond Haynes responded with a masterclass in counterattacking cricket. His 148 off 136 balls was a mix of aggression and elegance, featuring 16 fours and 2 sixes.

Thanks to Haynes, West Indies put up 313/9, a total that proved too much for Australia. The Windies sealed a 44-run win, and Haynes left the field to a standing ovation—his debut etched into cricketing folklore. At the top of the list is Matthew Breetzke, who lit up Lahore with a stunning 150 on his ODI debut against New Zealand. Starting cautiously, he built his innings patiently before exploding in the latter half. Breetzke’s 150 off 148 balls, decorated with 11 fours and 5 sixes, was a display of all-round stroke play. His knock guided South Africa to 304/6, setting up a memorable debut that will be talked about for years.(Agencies)
