Hyderabad: Telangana State’s formation is solely credited to the resolute leadership and unwavering commitment of Sonia Gandhi, stated Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy in Assembly on Monday. He reiterated that the announcement of Telangana’s creation on December 9, 2009, remains a landmark day in the state’s history and urged perpetual recognition of its significance.
Recalling the historic announcement by the then Union Home Minister on December 9, 2009, at 11 PM, Uttam Kumar Reddy said it marked an unforgettable moment of celebration across Telangana. Welcoming Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s recent decision to install a statue of Telangana Thalli at the state secretariat, he suggested similar installations in district headquarters. He also advocated for annual celebrations on December 9 to ensure the story of Telangana’s formation remains alive for future generations.

Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasised that Telangana’s people are forever indebted to Sonia Gandhi for standing firm on her commitment to statehood despite immense political pressures and challenges. He lauded her courage in delivering on the promise made during the 2004 Karimnagar rally, describing her as the sole architect of Telangana’s creation. He further highlighted that Hyderabad’s inclusion in Telangana and the allocation of its revenue exclusively to the state were possible only due to her determination.

Minister Uttam underlined his own significant role in Telangana’s formation, stating that he actively participated in all-party meetings held by the central government, where he presented strong arguments for the necessity of Telangana. Additionally, he provided comprehensive documentation to the Srikrishna Commission, detailing why the inclusion of Hyderabad in Telangana was essential and pressing for the fifth option of a Hyderabad-inclusive Telangana.
Uttam Kumar Reddy also praised Sonia Gandhi’s transformative leadership as UPA Chairperson, during which revolutionary laws such as the Right to Education, Right to Information, Food Security Act, and the National Employment Guarantee Act were enacted. He attributed these achievements to her visionary guidance.
He called for permanent recognition of Sonia Gandhi’s unparalleled contribution to Telangana. He urged the public and government to ensure that December 9 is celebrated annually with events that highlight the importance of Telangana’s formation and Sonia Gandhi’s pivotal role in achieving it.
