Southern states regional languages prominent intellectuals participated the Seminar
Dr B R Ambedkar Open University organised National Seminar on “South Indian Languages: Identity and Politics”
Hyderabad : Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University, faculty of Arts organised National Seminar on “South Indian Languages: Identity and Politics” on Friday at its campus.
Prakash Raj, Cine Actor and Social activist attended as the Chief Guest for the Inaugural session. Prakash Raj said that everyone has affection for their mother tongue, and while it’s important to master your own language and respect other languages, it’s not right to try to impose a foreign language on others. He stated that regional languages in the South are under attack, and therefore, conferences and meetings are being held extensively in the southern states to protect their languages. He said, “My mother tongue is Kannada, but I speak 7 languages, including Telugu. That’s why I speak Telugu so clearly. I have affection for other languages along with my mother tongue. I respect those languages. Despite having so many languages, diverse regions, and different religions, our country is very great.
However, some people, thinking that their language is the oldest and that they are superior, are looking down upon other languages. In some states of North India, people only know Hindi; they don’t know other languages. Because of this, they are trying to forcibly impose Hindi on the southern states.” Prakash Raj warned that if people come from other regions to earn a living and try to harm our language and culture, it will not be tolerated. He explained, “Our language, our culture, our voice, our pride, our identity – we will not give up our existence under any circumstances if someone tries to harm it. We respect you, and if you don’t respect us, we will teach you how to respect us.”
Dr. K. Srinivas, Former, Editor Andhra Jyothi and Writer delivered keynote address on “South Indian Languages: Identity and Politics”. Dr. Srinivas stated that South India is often presented as a success story of linguistic federalism, strong regional languages, cultural confidence, and resistance to Hindi nationalism and dominance. While all of this is true, he noted that it is not the whole story. South Indian linguistic politics must be understood within the context of the national constitution and historical framework, and not merely as an internal regional narrative. In India, language functions not just as an identity marker but as a political infrastructure, paving the way for access to education and power.
Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani, Vice-Chancellor of BRAOU Preside over the function. Prof Chakrapani stated that they are not against North India. He clarified that they have the right to question the injustice being done to the southern states regarding language, cultural attacks, people’s way of life, and the allocation of funds. Professor Ghanta Chakrapani revealed that Prakash Raj is not only an actor but also a great writer, producer, director, and a person recognized as a cultural bridge for the southern states.
Dr. Meena Kandasamy, acclaimed writer, poet, and activist was the Distinguished Guest for the program. While she speaking and sharing her perspective, she said that when we share our thoughts in our mother tongue, they ignite, but when we express the same things in English or other languages, it provides some leeway to avoid controversies. Meena Kandasamy opined that the most striking example of standing up for language, taking identity seriously, and fighting for self-determination and the preservation of culture was seen in the Tamil liberation movement that fought in the special Eelam movement during the 1980s and 1990s. She explained that it was during this period that women’s participation in the Eelam liberation movement was recognized. She stated that one-third of the Liberation Tigers were women. Women took up arms to reclaim their homeland because they believed that standing up for their language was important. This proved how far they were willing to go for their language.
In the first session that followed, Jilukara Srinivas (Telugu), Arvind Warrier (Malayalam), Prof. Tarakeshwar (Kannada), and Prof. Parthasarathi (Tamil) discussed regional languages, the challenges they face, and the strategies to be adopted for language preservation. Prof.Pillalamarri Ramulu, faculty member of the University of Hyderabad presided over the session.
In the second session, Professor Parthasarathi, EFLU, Hyderabad; Sri N. Venugopal, writer, journalist, and renowned critic; Prof. P. C. Venkateswarlu, Director, Oriental Research Institute, Tirupati (online), comprehensively discussed the difficult circumstances faced by South Indian languages, the dominance of North Indian languages over the people of South Indian states, and the attempts to forcibly impose North Indian languages on the South Indian states. Prof. Nityananda Rao, Vice-Chancellor of Suravaram Pratapa Reddy Telugu University presided over the session.
In the Valedictory session Mr. Satish Chapprike, Director of Book Brahma (Bengaluru) attended as the chief guest and delivered a speech. Professor K. Satyanarayana of the English and Foreign Languages University chaired the session, and Professor G. Pushpa Chakrapani, Academic Director of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, presided over it.
In the Valedictory Mr.Satish Chapprike, Director, Book Brahma (Bengaluru); and others participated. Professor K. Satyanarayana of the English and Foreign Languages University chaired the session. హైదరాబాద్ : డా. బి. ఆర్. అంబేద్కర్ సార్వత్రిక విశ్వవిద్యాలయం, కళల విభాగ ఆధ్వర్యంలో “దక్షిణ భారత భాషలు: గుర్తింపు మరియు రాజకీయాలు” అనే అంశంపై జాతీయ సదస్సు ప్రారంభోత్సవ కార్యక్రమానికి సినీ నటుడు, సామాజిక కార్యకర్త ప్రకాష్ రాజ్ ముఖ్య అతిథిగా హాజరయ్యారు.
ఆయన మాట్లాడుతూ మాతృ భాషపై ప్రతీ ఒక్కరికి మమకారం ఉంటుంది, నీ భాషపై పట్టు సాధించు ఇతర భాషలను గౌరవించు అంతేగానీ పరాయి భాషను ఇతరులపై రుద్దే ప్రయత్నం మంచిది కాదన్నారు. దక్షణాది రాష్ట్రాల ప్రాంతీయ భాషలపై దాడి జరుగుతుంది. భాషను కాపాడుకోవడానికి దక్షణాది రాష్ట్రాల్లో సదస్సులు సమావేశాలు విరివిగా జరుగుతున్నాయి. నా మాతృ భాష కన్నడ. కానీ నేను తెలుగు సహా 7 భాషలు మాట్లాడతాను. తెలుగు ఎందుకు ఇంత స్పష్టంగా మాట్లాడుతున్నాను. నాకు నా మాతృ భాషతో పాటు ఇతర భాషలపై అభిమానం, గౌరవం ఉంది. ఆయా భాషలను నేను గౌరవిస్తాను. దేశంలో చాలా భాషలు, భిన్న ప్రాంతాలు, భిన్న మతాలు ఉన్నా మన దేశంలో గొప్ప ఐకమత్యం ఉన్నది.
కొందరు మాత్రం మాదే పురాతన భాష అని, మేమే గొప్ప అని భావించటం వల్ల ఇతర భాషలను చిన్నచూపు చూస్తున్నారు. ఉత్తర భారత దేశంలో చాలా రాష్ట్రాలు వారికి హిందీ మాత్రమే వచ్చు. వారికి ఇతర భాషలు రావు. దీంతో వాళ్లు దక్షిణాది రాష్ట్రాలపై హిందీని బలవంతంగా రుద్దాలని ప్రయత్నం చేస్తున్నారు. ఇతర ప్రాంతాల నుంచి సంపాదించుకోవడానికి వచ్చి మా భాషను సంస్కృతిని దెబ్బతీయాలని చూస్తే ఉపేక్షించేది లేదని ప్రకాష్ రాజు హెచ్చరించారు. అమ్మ భాష అనేది మన సంస్కృతి మన ధ్వని, మన గర్వం, మన గుర్తింపు, దీన్ని ఎవరు దెబ్బతీయాలని చూసిన ఎట్టి పరిస్థితుల్లో మా ఉనికిని వదులుకోం. మేం మిమ్మల్ని గౌరవిస్తాం, మమ్మల్ని గౌరవించకపోతే ఎలా గౌరవించాలో కూడా నేర్పుతాం అని ప్రకాష్ రాజ్ హెచ్చరించారు.
ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి మాజీ సంపాదకులు, ప్రఖ్యాత రచయిత డా. కె. శ్రీనివాస్ “దక్షిణ భారత భాషలు: గుర్తింపు మరియు రాజకీయాలు” అనే అంశంపై కీలకోపన్యాసం చేశారు. శ్రీనివాస్ మాట్లాడుతూ దక్షిణ భారతదేశాన్ని తరచుగా భాషా సమాఖ్యవాదం, బలమైన ప్రాంతీయ భాషలు, సాంస్కృతిక విశ్వాసం మరియు హిందీ జాతీయవాదం, ఆధిపత్యంపై ప్రతిఘటన, అదో విజయగాథగా ప్రదర్శిస్తారని పేర్కొన్నారు, ఇవన్నీ నిజమే, కానీ అది మొత్తం కథ కాదు. దక్షిణ భారత భాషా రాజకీయాలను జాతీయ రాజ్యాంగం మరియు చారిత్రక చట్రం సందర్భంలో అర్థం చేసుకోవాలి. కేవలం అంతర్గత ప్రాంతీయ కథగా కాదు. భారతదేశంలో, భాష కేవలం ఒక గుర్తింపుగా కాకుండా రాజకీయ మౌలిక సదుపాయాలుగా పనిచేస్తుంది, ఇది విద్య, అధికారాన్ని అందుకోవడానికి బాటలు వేస్తుంది. మాతృ భాష విషయంలో ఎలాంటి శషభిషలు, ఎవరినీ కించ పర్చరాదని వారి వారి మాతృ భాషలను గౌరవించాలని సూచించారు.
ఈ కార్యక్రమానికి విశ్వవిద్యాలయ వైస్ ఛాన్సలర్ ప్రొ. ఘంటా చక్రపాణి అధ్యక్షత వహించారు. ప్రొ. చక్రపాణి మాట్లాడుతూ ఉత్తర భారతానికి మేం వ్యతిరేకం కాదు. దక్షిణాది రాష్ట్రాలకు భాషపైన, సాంస్కృతిక దాడిపై, ప్రజల జీవన విధానాలపై, నిధుల కేటాయింపుల్లో జరుగుతున్న అన్యాయాన్ని మేం ప్రశ్నించగలం అని స్పష్టం చేశారు. ప్రకాష్ రాజ్ కేవలం నటుడే కాదు, గొప్ప రచయిత, ప్రొడ్యూసర్, దర్శకులు, దక్షణాది రాష్ట్రాల సాంస్కృతిక వారధిగా గుర్తింపు ఉన్న వ్యక్తిగా ప్రొ. ఘంటా చక్రపాణి వెల్లడించారు. రానున్న రోజుల్లో దక్షణాది భాషల పరిరక్షణ, మాతృ భాషకు గౌరవం వచ్చేల మరిన్ని సదస్సులు నిర్వహించనున్నట్లు ఆయన వెల్లడించారు.
ప్రముఖ మళయాళ రచయిత్రి డా. మీనా కందసామి కార్యక్రమంలో విశిష్ట అతిథిగా హాజరయ్యారు. ఆమె మాట్లాడుతూ మన ఆలోచనలను మాతృభాషలో పంచుకున్నప్పుడు అవి ప్రజ్వరిల్లుతాయని, కానీ అవే విషయాలను ఆంగ్లంలో లేదా ఇతర భాషల్లో చెప్పినప్పుడు, వివాదాల నుండి తప్పించుకోవడానికి కొంత వెసులుబాటు లభిస్తుందని, కానీ భావాన్ని పూర్తి స్థాయిలో వ్యక్తీకరించాలేమని ఆమె పేర్కొన్నారు. భాష కోసం నిలబడటం, గుర్తింపును తీవ్రంగా పరిగణించడం, స్వీయ-నిర్ణయాధికారం కోసం, సంస్కృతి పరిరక్షణ కోసం పోరాడటం వంటి వాటికి అత్యంత స్పష్టమైన నిదర్శనం అని 1980 -1990లలో ప్రత్యేక ఈళం ఉద్యమ సమయంలో భాష ఆవశ్యకత కనిపించిందని మీనా కందసామి అభిప్రాయపడ్డారు. ఆ విముక్తి ఉద్యమంలో మహిళలు కూడా భాగమని గుర్తించడం జరిగిందిని వివరించారు. విముక్తి పులులలో మూడింట ఒక వంతు మంది మహిళలే ఉన్నారన్నారు. తమ మాతృభూమిని తిరిగి పొందడం కోసం మహిళలు ఆయుధాలు చేపట్టారు, తమ భాష కోసం నిలబడటం ముఖ్యమని వారు భావించారు.
అనతరం నిర్వహించిన మొదటి సెషన్లో జిలుకర శ్రీనివాస్ (తెలుగు), అరవింద్ వారియర్ (మలయాళం), ప్రొఫెసర్ తారకేశ్వర్ (కన్నడ), ప్రొఫెసర్ పార్థసారధి (తమిళం) ప్రాంతీయ భాషలు, ఎదుర్కొంటున్న పరిస్థితులు, భాషా పరిరక్షణ కోసం అనుసరించాల్సిన వ్యూహాలపై చర్చించారు. కాగా ఈ సెషన్ కు హైదరాబాద్ కేంద్రీయ విశ్వవిద్యాలయ అధ్యాపకులు ప్రొ. పిల్లలమఱ్ఱి రాములు అద్యక్షత వహించారు.
రెండో సెషన్లో హైదరాబాద్లోని ఇంగ్లిష్ అండ్ ఫారిన్ లాంగ్వేజెస్ యూనివర్సిటీ అధ్యాపకులు ప్రొ. పార్ధసారథి, రచయిత, పాత్రికేయులు, ప్రఖ్యాత విమర్శకులు శ్రీ. ఎన్. వేణుగోపాల్, తిరుపతి లోని ఓరియంటల్ రీసెర్చ్ ఇన్స్టిట్యూట్ డైరెక్టర్ ప్రొ. పి. సి. వెంకటేశ్వర్లు (అంతర్జాలం ద్వార) దక్షినాది భాషలు ఎదుర్కొంటున్న గడ్డు పరిస్థితులు, దక్షణాది రాష్ట్రాల ప్రజలపై ఉత్తరాది బాషల అజమాయిషీ, ఉత్తరాది భాషలను బలవంతంగా దక్షణాది రాష్ట్రాలపై రుద్దే ప్రయత్నంపై సమగ్రంగా చర్చించారు. ఈ సెషన్ కు సురవరం ప్రతాప రెడ్డి తెలుగు యూనివర్సిటీ వైస్ చాన్స్లర్ ప్రొ. నిత్యానంద రావు అద్యక్షత వహించారు.
అనతరం నిర్వహించిన ముగింపు సమావేశంలో బుక్ బ్రహ్మ (బెంగళూరు) డైరెక్టర్ సతీష్ చప్ప్రీకే తదితరులు పాల్గొనగా ఈ ముగింపు సమావేశానికి ఇంగ్లిష్ అండ్ ఫారిన్ లాంగ్వేజెస్ యూనివర్సిటీ అధ్యాపకులు ప్రొ. కే. సత్యనారాయణ చైర్మన్ గా, అంబేద్కర్ ఓపెన్ యూనివర్సిటీ అకాడమిక్ డైరెక్టర్ ప్రొ. జి. పుష్పా చక్రపాణి అద్యక్షత వహించారు. సెమినార్ డైరెక్టర్ ప్రొ. ఎన్. రజని. ఈ సదస్సులో విద్యార్థులు, భాషా పరిశోధకులు, భాషా ఉద్యమకారులు ఎక్కువ సంఖ్యలో పాల్గొన్నారు.
